Each year, Changeling give their loyal audience the opportunity to vote for the Shakespeare play they would like to see performed the next year, and Changeling Theatre is delighted to announce that following their sell-out 2021 tour, the audience has voted for Othello to be performed in 2022.
Changeling Theatre is a registered charity and professional touring theatre company serving community audiences across South East England. Best known for their hugely successful open-air tour every Summer, Changeling Theatre take theatre beyond the stage, creating site-specific performances of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in locations ranging from castles to beaches to football stadiums. Due to demand from many of the venues where Changeling Theatre performs, the charity has made the exciting decision to run two shows in 2022. In addition to Othello, the tour will also deliver performances of Oscar Wilde’s satirical masterpiece, ‘The Importance of being Earnest’.
This year, Changeling are delivering Othello, Shakespeare’s edge-of-the-seat thriller and in true Changeling style, the production promises to fizz with passion, intrigue, dark humour and elements of the sultry Argentine Tango, influenced by the Evita era with music by Dre.
In addition, the tour will also deliver performances of Oscar Wilde’s satirical masterpiece, The Importance of being Earnest. This much loved and frankly bonkers play mocks Victorian sensibilities with some of the best loved and bizarre characters to be found on the modern stage and Changeling will be adding their unique take on it, with nods to the pretention of Made in Chelsea. If that’s not sold it to you, then there’s always the line about the handbag.
Opening on 1 July and running until 21 August, the tour will perform at a number of fantastic locations in and around Kent and Sussex: Maidstone, Canterbury, Deal, Brighton, Rye, Dymchurch, Sevenoaks, Folkestone, Rochester, Gravesend, Dartford and Margate.
Please follow Changeling on Facebook @Changeling Theatre or Instagram @changeling_theatre or visit www.changeling-theatre.com – you will not want to miss out on this hugely popular tour!

HOUSE OF CARDS MEETS SHAKESPEARE IN CHANGELING THEATRE’S THRILLING OPEN-AIR TOUR THIS SUMMER
Kent’s leading touring company Changeling Theatre is bringing the bard to open air venues across Kent next month in their edge-of-the-seat production of Othello.
Chosen in 2021 by Changeling’s audience in the company’s popular annual vote, Othello is one of Shakespeare’s best known tragedies.
Fans of Netflix drama House of Cards will find parallels between the sinister Frank Underwood and Othello’s lead villain Iago. Fuelled by jealousy and betrayal Iago, like Underwood, lies and manipulates his way to the top, taking down anyone who stands in his way.
Othello is a classy and compelling thriller, and Changeling’s production is a brooding, glamorous, passionate production set in the oppressive heat and politically-charged backdrop of 1950s Argentina.
The production promises to fizz with tension as the tango-inspired power dance takes place between Iago and Othello which ultimately, in true Shakespearean style, ends in devastating tragedy.
2022 marks Changeling’s 21st year of outdoor touring since the company first toured Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream back in 2001.The company is also touring Oscar Wilde’s satirical masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest.
Changeling’s creative director Rob Forknall says:
“I’ve been wanting to direct this show for a long time and now the time is right. Our audiences clearly agree as this is their choice and we couldn’t be more delighted. Betrayal, jealousy, power, corruption – it’s all there in this intense and brilliant play. Fans of House of Cards and Line of Duty will absolutely love it.”
Councillor Fay Gooch, Mayor of Maidstone said:
“Mention the Changeling Theatre to me and my eyes light up! Their open-air production of ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ earlier this year at Boughton Monchelsea Place bowled me over with its originality, its energy, its excitement – Shakespeare as I’d never experienced it before. I just can’t wait to see their production of Othello. How incredibly fortunate we are that so much talent is based here in the County Town of Kent where the people of Maidstone can savour the truly joyful experience of outdoor theatre at its best: fresh air and fun - just what we all need to give our wellbeing a boost!”
The company will perform Othello in outdoor locations from Friday 1 July to Sunday 21 August 2022, in venues as diverse as Rochester Castle and Riverhill Himalayan Gardens to a wide range of public gardens, parks, amphitheatres and many of the county’s best loved castles. There are some exciting new venues to look out for too.
Changeling newcomer Tré Medley takes the title role and Tom Mahy makes his debut as Iago. TV’s Tracy Beaker star Noah Marullo plays Cassio.
This year’s Changeling Apprentice is 19 year-old Alfie Mapes from Bearsted who will play Montano. And the company welcome back Annabelle Blake from West Malling to play Othello’s wife Desdemona. Annabelle played Hermia in 2021’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
