Rethink mental illness

The Rethink Medway Peer Support Group meets on the second Monday of every month from 1pm until 3pm at Balmoral Gardens Community Healthy Living Centre, Balmoral Clinic, Balmoral Gardens, Gillingham, Kent ME7 4PN.

The group offers people living with mental illness, alongside carers and community members supporting someone with mental illness, the chance to come together in a safe, supportive, and welcoming space. They hold regular meetings to provide a consistent support system and non-judgmental space, so members can openly share their experiences. They want to empower members to actively participate in their mental health journeys and reduce the stigma around mental illness.

Simon is one of the organisers and he says:

“We are all volunteers who‘ve faced our own mental health challenges, and we've come together to create a welcoming space for anyone in Medway who's struggling with similar issues or feeling a bit isolated. Our group offers peer support in a relaxed, non-clinical setting.

“While we don't provide formal therapy or counselling, we create a supportive environment where members can connect, share experiences, and engage in various activities. These include quizzes, Tai Chi and Qigong sessions, bowling outings, and occasional theatre trips. We're proud to be part of Rethink Mental Illness, a national charity that has been supporting people affected by mental illness for over 50 years. This connection allows us to provide reliable information and signposting to professional services when needed.”
