Wisdom Hospice at 40

There may be many who haven’t come across the Wisdom Hospice before. The truth is, no one really thinks about a hospice – or in particular their local hospice – unless of course they have either had a friend or loved one under the care of one. A hospice offers palliative end of life care as well as emotional support for those in need in a homelike setting, so quality of life is maintained as best as possible.

MOLLY WISDOM

For those not familiar with the Wisdom Hospice it is the local adult hospice for Medway and Swale, based in Rochester, off St William’s way. The hospice has been open for 40 years since the late HM Queen Elizabeth officially opened the building on 31st October 1984.

Now in its 40th year, the hospice is named after the late Molly Wisdom who vowed to raise money, along with a local committee, to run coffee mornings and other fundraising events and to help bring an adult hospice to the local community. Work still goes on today to support the running costs of the hospice and that’s where the Friends of the Wisdom Hospice come in, to carry on the work of Molly and serve the communities of Medway and Swale.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

The Friends put on a series of fundraising events aimed at all ages. Whether someone wants to donate in memory, run a fun run for the Friends or play the Wisdom Lottery, there are so many ways to support. In recent years the local High Streets have also welcomed Wisdom Hospice Shops and a online eBay offering, all of which have been very successful. Showing support can also be as simple as having a clear-out of preloved items and donating them to any of our stores. Giving your time by volunteering will also help support, whether that’s working a shift at your local shop or marshalling at the next color run – it all helps.

WE NEEED YOUR SUPPORT

Although you may not have known anyone that has used the services of the Wisdom Hospice, with an ageing population this is likely to change, however anyone may need to use a hospice at any time of their life. With the increased pressures on the NHS especially after the pandemic, and increased costs, The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice need your support. Keep a look out for more events brought to you by our incredible fundraising team and consider coming along. Or, next time you’re nearby, do pop into one of our shops and see what we have to sell.

The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice NEEDS to raise £2,000 a day to support the hospice and the brilliant work everyone does. For more ways to support your local adult hospice please visit www.fowh.org.uk or look out for our social media platforms.
